Google AI program supports non-profit universities

    August 6, 2025

Google has announced a $1 billion investment over the next three years to expand access to artificial intelligence education and tools for higher education institutions and non-profit organizations across the United States. The initiative is designed to support academic research and student training in AI through a range of resources provided by the company.

The program currently includes more than 100 participating universities, such as Texas A&M University and the University of North Carolina. Institutions involved will receive financial grants, cloud computing credits, and complimentary licenses for the enterprise version of Google’s Gemini chatbot.

These tools are intended to facilitate AI-related learning and research activities. According to the company, the initiative aims to extend support to all accredited non-profit colleges across the United States. Google has also indicated that it is considering similar plans for international expansion, although no specific countries or dates have been announced.

Google partners with academic sector to boost AI use

James Manyika, Senior Vice-President at Google for Research, Labs, Technology and Society, said the goal is to make AI education more accessible and to equip academic institutions with the necessary infrastructure to engage with AI technologies. In comments reported by Reuters, he confirmed the company’s intention to broaden the program’s reach both domestically and potentially abroad.

The announcement follows similar moves by other technology firms. Microsoft recently committed $4 billion to support global AI integration in education. Other companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have also introduced programs aimed at advancing AI literacy and access in academic and non-profit sectors. As part of its offering, Google will provide access to the advanced version of its Gemini chatbot, which includes features intended for institutional use.

These capabilities are designed to support faculty and students in applying AI tools across various research and instructional settings. The initiative aligns with Google’s broader efforts to promote the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence. The company continues to engage with educational institutions, government agencies, and industry partners as part of its AI strategy. – By Content Syndication Services.
